FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is a healing practice that uses ultra-thin, sterile needles to gently activate your body’s natural ability to heal itself. By improving circulation and stimulating your nervous system, acupuncture helps restore balance to your internal organs and overall well-being.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we believe that Qi (vital energy) flows through pathways called meridians, connecting everything in your body—your organs, tissues, and emotions. When this flow is blocked or off-balance, it can lead to pain, illness, or emotional stress. Acupuncture helps clear these blockages and restore harmony.

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture stimulates points near nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, triggering physiological responses that aid healing, reduce inflammation, and restore balance.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of acupuncture sessions you’ll need can vary depending on your individual condition, its severity, and how your body responds to treatment. Some people feel improvement after just one session, while others may require a series of treatments to experience lasting results.

For acute conditions (such as a recent injury or headache), you might see improvement in just a few visits, typically 3-5 sessions. For chronic issues (like long-term pain, stress, or digestive issues), it may take more sessions—anywhere from 6-12 or more, depending on how your body responds to the treatment.
In general, frequency of treatments starts off higher, with sessions being scheduled 1-2 times a week, then gradually decreases as your condition improves.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture actually is. The needles are super thin—about the width of a hair—and are nothing like the ones used for shots. You might feel a tiny pinch, a bit of warmth, or a mild tingling sensation, but many people feel nothing at all. Soledad uses a gentle, skilled approach to make sure your treatment is comfortable and stress-free. If you’re ever unsure or nervous, she’s always happy to talk you through it.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes, acupuncture can be safe during pregnancy when performed by a trained and experienced practitioner. In fact, many women find acupuncture helpful for managing common pregnancy-related discomforts, such as nausea, fatigue, lower back pain, and stress.
However, acupuncture during pregnancy requires special care and attention. Certain acupuncture points are avoided in pregnant women due to their potential to stimulate uterine contractions. A skilled practitioner will ensure that only safe, gentle, and appropriate points are used based on the stage of pregnancy and individual needs.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

We are currently out of network with most insurance providers. This means that we do not directly bill your insurance for acupuncture treatments. However, many patients are still able to receive reimbursement through their insurance company’s out-of-network benefits. If your plan includes out-of-network coverage, we can provide you with a superbill—an itemized invoice of your treatment—that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. We recommend checking with your insurer to understand your specific benefits and reimbursement process.
