The path to parenthood is not always simple. If you face fertility problems , you are not alone. At Solstice Acupuncture , Soledad Duffy helps couples build their families through specialized fertility acupuncture.

Whether you are trying to conceive, preparing for IVF, or supporting your body through pregnancy, acupuncture works with your body’s natural rhythms to improve reproductive health.

Understanding Fertility Challenges

Infertility affects 1 in 8 American couples. The causes are many:

Female factors: PCOS, endometriosis, irregular ovulation, thyroid problems, age-related decline, blocked fallopian tubes

Male factors: Low sperm count, poor sperm movement, hormonal imbalances

Lifestyle factors: Chronic stress, poor sleep, nutritional gaps, environmental toxins

How Acupuncture Supports Fertility

Acupuncture has helped reproductive health for thousands of years and modern research shows how it works:

1. Regulates Hormones

Acupuncture balances the system that controls reproductive hormones. Studies in Fertility and Sterility show it regulates FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone—all essential for conception. For women with PCOS, acupuncture can restore ovulation and regular cycles.

2. Increases Blood Flow

Ultrasound studies prove acupuncture improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Better blood flow means:

∙ More nutrients to developing eggs

∙ Thicker uterine lining for implantation

∙ Better ovarian response

3. Improves Egg and Sperm Quality

Research shows acupuncture reduces oxidative stress, improving egg quality in women over 35. For men, studies in Andrologia found it improves sperm concentration, movement, and shape.

4. Reduces Stress

The fertility journey creates chronic stress, which itself harms fertility by disrupting hormones and ovulation. Acupuncture activates your body’s relaxation response and lowers cortisol. Studies show women receiving acupuncture report much lower anxiety during treatment.

5. Supports Implantation

For couples doing IVF or IUI, acupuncture around embryo transfer may improve success. Research shows it can reduce uterine contractions and improve implantation rates.

Acupuncture and IVF: Working Together

If you are undergoing IVF in Houston, acupuncture complements your treatment.

A 2018 Cochrane review found acupuncture may increase live birth rates in IVF, especially when done around embryo transfer.

Optimal Timing:

  • Pre-IVF (3+ months before): Improve egg quality, regulate cycles, reduce stress
  • Stimulation Phase: Support ovarian response, minimize hormone side effects
  • Embryo Transfer: Sessions before and after transfer to support implantation
  • Post-Transfer: Support early pregnancy, reduce miscarriage risk

FAQs

Fertility Acupuncture

Can acupuncture really help with fertility?

YES! . Acupuncture can improve ovarian function, support egg development, and increase blood flow to the uterus. I use specific  protocols that help balance hormones, regulate the folicular and lutheal phase, and reduce inflammation that might be affecting implantation.

Can I do acupuncture while going through IVF?

I strongly recommend it. I tailor treatments to each phase of the cycle: egg retrieval, embryo transfer, and the two-week wait. Studies show acupuncture may help regulate cortisol, support implantation, and improve outcomes when done in sync with your fertility plan.

How often should I have acupuncture for fertility?

The  frequency of treatment will vary depending on the each woman’s  reproductive health, stress levels, etc. Most clients receive acupuncture once or twice a week for several weeks or months.  When going through IVF or IUI  treatment are timed with your protocols including down regulation, egg collection or transfer.

What are the risks of fertility acupuncture?

The good news is that there is little to no risk when it comes to acupuncture for fertility. Some common complications include a little tenderness or bruising where the needles are inserted and outside of that, there is no real risk.

My Fertility Journey

After struggling to stay pregnant, I found acupuncture during my own fertility journey and felt a change I couldn’t ignore. What started as a search for answers became my career because it helped me finally carry a healthy pregnancy and enjoy both pregnancy and childbirth. That experience reshaped my purpose and now I help other women through fertility and pregnancy with the support and hope I once needed.
